The title I’m most proud of is Mom-In-Chief, but if you’re like most moms, you’re a multi-hyphenate professional juggler. Amirite? Many of us are mompreneurs and Chief Medical Officers all in one! When I was younger, there are two things that I never had a burning desire to do; 1. be an entrepreneur, 2. be a mom. It just looked too hard….I was right! While being a business owner and mama are very challenging, they are now the two things I identify with the most. They bring joy, purpose, and passion into my life. The two also bring an enormous requirement of responsibility and selflessness on my part. So what’s the #1 self-care thing you can do for yourself as a mompreneur?! It’s simple. Annual eye- exams!

Usually, the first thing to suffer in juggling 2 boys and 2 businesses is basic self-care for myself. Can you relate? A comprehensive eye exam, however, helps me detect many underlying health issues. These include high blood pressure, diabetes, certain cancers and auto-immune diseases. Not to mention, your ability to see! With VSP Individual Vision Plans you can get plans for as low as $13/month and get the following covered annually:

  • A comprehensive eye exam
  • Prescription lenses with covered lens enhancements
  • A generous allowance for frames and/or contacts
  • A wide selection of brand name frames
  • And access to the largest network of independent eye doctors
  • The next business day after enrollment, you can visit a VSP network doctor and begin using your vision benefits!

Mama Wifi

We’ve all seen the quote about needing to put our oxygen mask on first before we can put other’s gas masks on. It’s true! But what I find the truest insight about self-care is that everyone at home runs on the mama wifi. If we are in a bad mood, are sick or beyond stressed with work, etc., everyone suffers.

As mamas, we are all wired to feed (sometimes overfeed :)), and keep our babies healthy. We NEVER miss our kids’ healthcare appointments, do we? I run to the doctor at the first 48 hours of fever, if they are scratching themselves too much or wake up achy in the morning. I’m not kidding, I’ve run to the kids’ doctor’s walk-in hours when one of them once woke up with sore legs one morning. But what about me?

Things usually have to be really wrong by the time I finally make it in to see a medical provider. Being in the fitness business, I KNOW better! Except, there’s no time, it’s so expensive, or the classic “I’ll be fine!”. I encourage you to carve out a bit of time and make an exam. I’m trying not to be short-sighted (pun intended) and get a handle on my health. Because if I’m not well, everyone suffers.

Wellthy- Self-care for Mompreneurs

Nowadays, we have more access than ever to information about our health and wellness. There’s a solution it seems for everything. In a way, it’s really empowering and enlightening. On the other hand, it can be overwhelming and we can lose sight of the basics. When I really cull it down, the appointments that are non-negotiable for me besides my hair appointments (LOL) are: annual exam, teeth cleanings and now vision exams!

These aren’t trends that are not going to be “hot” or irrelevant next year. When you feel overwhelmed by all the information, getting back to basics can be your best compass! Likewise, I hope that you check out these plans, you’ll feel immediately empowered of your wellness.

My Vision Story

I also just want to take a moment to talk about why this self-care for mompreneurs is so meaningful to me! First of all, I have terrible vision, always have. I had my first pair of glasses at age 6, and even with Lasik surgery with a top doctor, I have really never seen that well! Moreover, a year after having my first boy, I noticed fog and weakness in my vision. I got really concerned because I just couldn’t see that well. Therefore, I went to get checked out and they found nothing wrong with my eyes or eyesight. It was a huge relief! As a result, I think I was just really exhausted from being a new mom, not sleeping and running an exhausting fitness business.

That was 4 years ago! I just made my vision appointment and signed on with VSP today, and I hope that you do too! By the way, I used to dislike the term mompreneur. Why does nobody call men dadpreneurs? Well, now that I’m 5 years into motherhood, I kinda understand why. Moms rule the house in a way that dads can’t. However, we can also run businesses and be leaders outside the home, so I now wear my mompreneur badge proudly! Wishing you all the wellth! XO, Z
