Tadashi Shoji New York Fashion Week 2019

Tadashi Shoji is one of those designers that I had heard a lot about but hadn’t seen in person. I was so excited when I had the opportunity to attend his show last Feb! My first impression when I got to see some pieces backstage, was that they were all so diverse. The common thread; glam to the max. Every dress seemed ever so unique as though it was created as individual as the woman who wears it. I wanted to do a post to give you a little taste of what I saw with a focus on fashion designer Tadashi Shoji.

Tadashi Shoji

Background:

Tadashi Shoji was born in Sendai Japan, where he started his career as an artist interested in drawing and painting. At one point he even assisted Japan’s leading contemporary artist, Jiro Takamatsu. However, after hearing about opportunities abroad he traveled to the US where he became interested in fashion design.

Shoji first launched his own fashion label in 1982 with ideas of creating chic evening wear that was accessible to women of all sizes. This intention was apparent throughout the entire show. Women of all shapes and sizes graced the catwalk and they looked BEAUTIFUL!

Shoji’s work at New York Fashion Week:

Shoji is best known for using stretch fabrics and fluid silhouettes, and I definitely felt how his artist background influenced his work. The music was whimsical with high tone flute accents throughout. It added an element of exotic, birdlike images in my mind and the fabrics seemed to dance along to the soundtrack!

One of my favorite pieces was a delicate pale pink long gown that had dreamy ruffles and layers of tulle (dress above). It was out of this world! Another favorite, was in stark contrast; a blue sequined gown that felt mysterious and Bond Girl-esque.

My Captures:

This was such a fun show for me because not only did I meet great people, I got interviewed by great people! I got to meet Lareina Sun from Fashion News Online and saw my beautiful Russian blogger seat bud from Noon by Noor: Karina. I also had the amazing opportunity to do a interview with Amazon Prime’s hit series Fashion News Lifestyle Network! You can watch that here!

Learn more about the other designers I saw at New York Fashion Week, Noon by Noor and Pamella Roland! I’d love to hear your thoughts on these designers! XO, Z
